Five DIY projects to plan for the new year

  1. Tone your brass hardware.
Ever notice how the brass in your house gets ugly and discolored? Try a brass darkening solution to freshen up your hardware.
  2. Modernize with two-tone stair railings.
A popular trend these days is two-tone stair railings. One method to update yours is to use a combination of paint and stain — this can really freshen things up.
  3. Change a closet to a desk area.
Have a closet you don’t use? Easily convert it to a desk with some painted wood planks.
  4. Replace switch plates.
An easy way to freshen up a room is to change the covers for your light switches.
  5. Turn cabinets into shelving.
Open shelving is all the rage these days. Remove the doors to some of the upper cabinets in your living room or kitchen and paint the inside. This creates a fun, clean look.
