Did you know that September 22nd is nationally recognized as Falls Prevention Awareness Day? Marked by the beginning of the fall season, the National Council on Aging (NCO) describes the day as a campaign to increase awareness around falls, health and injury prevention.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) more than 25% of Americans aged 65+ fall each year. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older adults. Help reduce the risk of falling by having your eyes and hearing checked regularly by a doctor, keeping your home well-lit and keeping floors clear of cords and rugs.
The majority (60%) of falls happen within a home. DURA’s housing rehabilitation programs can help make qualifying Denver homeowners and renters’ homes safe and livable.
