Holiday kitchen safety

Did you know cooking is the leading cause of all residential fires across the U.S.? During the holidays, your kitchen may be the most important room in your house. Make sure yours is safe with these tips:

  • – Ensure all cords, plugs and wires are working properly and have three prongs for a grounded connection. Replace any appliances that could cause a fire hazard.
  • – Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby in the kitchen. A dry chemical extinguisher is preferred for kitchens because it can put out different types of fires. There are also wet chemical extinguishers available to put out oil or fat-induced fires.
  • – Never use water to put out a grease fire! Pouring water can cause the oil to splash and spread the fire even worse.
  • – Use a timer to help you remember to check on food to avoid anything burning or spilling over.
  • – Keep the floor clear of clutter, pets and children to avoid falls.
  • – Remember to turn off appliances before going to bed.
