A key goal for Denver in the early 1990s was the establishment of a convention headquarters hotel to support the newly constructed Colorado Convention Center. An opportunity presented itself in 1993 with the closing of the May D&F Department Store at 16th Street and Tremont Place. Once an important part of Denver’s thriving downtown, the closing of the May D&F and adjoining Zeckendorf Plaza left an entire city block, historically known as Courthouse Square, vacant.
In 1994, HBE Corporation began planning development of a conference center hotel at Courthouse Square that included renovation of the former 739-room Radisson Hotel-Denver at 16th Street and Court Place and redevelopment of the May D&F site and Zeckendorf Plaza. The completed project, the Adam’s Mark Hotel, created a 1,230-room full service convention headquarters hotel with more than 16,000 square feet of banquet and meeting space, and 17,000 square feet of ground floor restaurant and retail space.
Completed in 1997, the project greatly expanded Denver’s convention booking opportunities and helped to revitalize the upper end of the 16thStreet Mall.
HBE Corporation sold the hotel to Chartres Lodging Group in February 2008, and today Starwood Hotels operates the facility as the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel. A major renovation was undertaken in 2008 and included renovation of all rooms, suites, the lobby, and the restaurant facing the 16thStreet Mall.
