Summer Energy Efficiency – Our tips and tricks

August in Denver is HOT. With prices increasing for energy, we wanted to share some tips to stay energy efficient – yet cool – as we head into the final stretch of summer.

Adjust your thermostat
This may seem obvious, but according to the Department of Energy, every degree you raise your thermostat above 72 degrees in the summer can save you up to 3% of your cooling expenses. Keep the temps even higher when you know you won’t be home for long periods, and adjust accordingly when you’re in for the night.

Fan yourself
We’re not talking about getting an arm workout in with a handheld fan, but using things like box fans or ceiling fans will make your home feel cooler for a fraction of the price. Just remember to turn them off when you’re not in the room!

Close the blinds and check your window seals
We love natural light as much as everyone else, but closing your blinds during the hot sunny days in Denver will actually keep your home much cooler. Southern and western-facing walls will take the most heat, so consider investing in high-quality shades to keep your home feeling cool.
Also, check out your window seals to ensure they’re not leaking in warm (or cool!) air. Need assistance repairing your windows? DURA’s Housing Program can help.

Skip the oven meals
Hey, it’s barbecue season anyway! Using an oven during these dog days of summer can significantly heat up your home, forcing you to use extra energy to keep it cool. When you can, opt out of the oven meals this summer…don’t worry, comfort meals on a cozy fall day are just around the corner.
